The federation's executive said it's looking forward to the task force recommendations and plans to implement its own policy, which the federation tabled in November 2008. "We've always had policies, we don't want to have a child care bubble. We want the best policy for children," federation spokeswoman Michelle Carroll said. The policy focuses on ways to improve child care for children from birth to age six with the goal of ensuring that children are safe and can be cared for in a setting where they can develop. It also includes healthy eating and activity guidelines for children, along with nutrition and physical activity resources to help childcare providers and parents be as active as possible. Clothing recommendations There were some suggestions within the task force report that child care should be required to have clothing policies similar to those in the education sector. "Given the tender years of the children and the fact we don't have the liability we have in education... there are some things that should be mandated," said Karen Campbell, an occupational health and safety representative. The report doesn't recommend making a specific policy statement but rather says children should have appropriate clothing. "I'd like a lot of the documents from the report to have some specific items that they're required to have," said Dawn Pritchard, executive director of the Federation of Early Childhood Educators. Her organization is concerned about the way children are dressed and what the weather conditions are when they leave their home. Pritchard also hopes the report will encourage policy makers to support early childhood education. "We're trying to find out what will happen to licensing if we don't have licensing and what will happen to our training standards if we don't have licensing," she said.
